5th Dimension

The teaching philosophy of the Fifth Dimension is to provide children with as much help as they need, but only when help is needed. We view instruction as joint activity, the co-construction of a "zone of proximal development by two or more participants, mediated through language and other cultural tools.

One participant usually has more expertise than another. However, as participants journey through the "zone of proximal development" the level of expertise changes for all participants. The knowledge and skill of the more expert participant changes as guided assistance is provided to participants possessing less knowledge and skill. Take a look at the various site locations and the work of the kids from Blowing Rock, Hardin Park, Mabel, Valle Crucis, Westwood, ASU, Parkway, and Cranberry/Freedom Trail.
