December 2005
Edwin Duncan Hall
Congratulations are due GARY MOORMAN (LRE). He was the recipient of the second annual American Reading Forum Brenda S. Townsend Service Award at the American Reading Forum Conference at Sanibel Island, Florida this past December. This honor was bestowed upon Dr. Moorman in recognition of his dedication and commitment to the organization in creating the first website for the organization at http://www.americanreadingforum.org. For many years, Dr. Moorman, with the assistance of several graduate students, and other technology experts from Appalchian State have designed, created and maintained a world-class website “bringing the organization into the 21st Century” according to Joyce Fine, Chair of the service award committee. This has brought new recognition to the organization with thousands of literacy professionals logging into the site each year. The website now encourages a worldwide readership of the yearbook and PowerPoint presentations which are available free to anyone on-line. The picture Scrapbook is just one of the many features that conveys the feeling of true collegiality and mentorship, a mainstay of the organization.

From KATIE LAMBERTH, Student-Coordinator and Initiator:
Service Learning can be done anywhere, in any class. Elementary Eduction majors in Block 437 were very concerned about the effects of Hurricane Katrina, especially on school children. Therefore, the Block
(21 students) decided to conduct their own service-learning project, which incorporated students' knowledge of children's literature with the needs of schools devasted by Katrina. Money collected on campus went to purchase excellent books for K-6 children, which were then shipped to three different schools: Bayou Woods Elementary (Slidell,
LA) , Carolyn Park Middle School (Slidell, LA), and Sharon Elementary (Laurel, MS). This was a student initiated and implemented project.
There were over 800 books that were shipped out to these schools in order to enrich the lives of the children.
Reich College of Education organizes High Country JASON Conference
September 22-23, 2005
Broyhill Inn & Conference Center
From ROB SANDERS, Coordinator:
"[The Conference] was a huge success, due in large part to the wonderful people I worked with to bring it all together.
We used 10 trainers (all ASU faculty and students) to train 125 teachers from many disciplines (mostly science and math). Each trainer took a lesson from the JASON curriculum and prepared that lesson to share with those teachers who attended that session (see breakout matrix).
The evaluations we received were great. My favorite was one that stated, 'I learned much more than I could ever expect. I gathered
more info today than I have in my 20 years of teaching.' This teacher went on to say, 'This is the best science workshop I have ever been involved. Thank you!' "
