Reading Education Program Information
A letter of introduction from Dr. Woodrow Trathen, Coordinator, Reading Education, Appalachian State University:
Dear Prospective Graduate Student:
Thank you for your interest in the Advanced Master's program in reading at Appalachian State University. Appalachian has long been recognized as an outstanding teacher education institution. Students completing the Advanced Master's degree in reading are regarded as well trained and are readily hired to teach in public schools across the country.
The Advanced Master's degree in reading at Appalachian is diverse, offering two concentrations to persons who are interested in teaching reading and language arts: Classroom/Clinical and Adult Literacy. Each concentration provides a well-balanced program of academic and practicum experiences designed to produce graduates capable of providing quality services to the region, state, and nation. The classroom/clinical concentration prepares classroom teachers and reading specialists to teach all aspects of reading and language arts to students with a wide range of abilities in kindergarten through grade 12. Completion of this concentration leads to Advanced Master's teaching certification. The adult literacy concentration, an on-campus program, prepares instructors to deliver and coordinate literacy services for under-prepared adults.
The graduate program in reading requires 39 semester hours for completion. Click here for Information on Admission Procedures. For your convenience, other links to information about the program and the graduate school can be found below. To assist full-time, on-campus students with their studies, the Graduate School has made a substantial amount of fellowship money and assistantship money available. In addition, loans and work programs are available to qualified students.
