Communication Disorders Graduate Non-Degree Status
Information for persons who want to take Communication Disorders
graduate courses in non-degree-seeking status (Revised 12/18/07)
Interested persons may request permission from the Communication Disorders Program to take up to 9sh of graduate courses in Non-Degree-Seeking status. Persons who are considering this should understand that the Communication Disorders Program considers performance in graduate course work, in decisions regarding admission to degree-seeking graduate study in the Program, only when the applicant has completed a graduate degree. In those cases, the cumulative GPA for the completed graduate degree may be substituted for an undergraduate GPA. Consistent with that policy (i.e., because it does not constitute a completed graduate degree), Communication Disorders graduate course work completed in non-degree status is not considered in decisions regarding admission to degree-seeking graduate study in the Program. Complete the process as described in #1 or #2, below, whichever applies to you, in order to obtain permission to enroll in one or more CD graduate courses:
- If you have not applied for admission to graduate study in the Program, or you have been admitted and are withdrawing from the Program, you should contact Graduate Studies and Research, complete the appropriate documents, and follow the process that is applicable for your status at the time of the request.
- If you have applied for admission to graduate study in the Program, and have not been offered admission, there are three steps that must be completed before you will be allowed to register for courses:
- The first step is to complete the Change of Classification Approval Form (see attached sample form). The completed form must indicate that you have applied for admission to graduate study and have not been offered admission. Approval of the change in classification must be granted by Dr. Holly Hirst in Graduate Studies and Research in order for you to have final permission to take graduate courses in non-degree-seeking status. Approval will be granted or denied when the completed Change of Classification Approval Form is returned to Graduate Studies and Research.
- Once the Change of Classification Approval Form has been approved, you have two choices regarding application for admission to non-degree status:
- You may use the original application for admission to graduate study as the application for admission to Non-Degree-Seeking status. This will require a new application and a new application fee (and probably new recommendations) if you wish to be reconsidered for admission to graduate study in a later review.
OR - You may complete a new application and pay a new application fee specifically for admission to Non-Degree-Seeking status. This will reserve the original application for admission to graduate study if you wish to be reconsidered for admission to graduate study in a later review.
In either case, the application for admission to Non-Degree-Seeking Status must also be approved by Dr. Holly Hirst, in Graduate Studies and Research. Approval will be granted or denied when the application, application fee, and supporting documentation are received in Graduate Studies and Research.
- You may use the original application for admission to graduate study as the application for admission to Non-Degree-Seeking status. This will require a new application and a new application fee (and probably new recommendations) if you wish to be reconsidered for admission to graduate study in a later review.
- When you have completed the procedures outlined above, you must request permission to take specific graduate courses offered by the Communication Disorders Program (see attached sample Non-Degree Approval Form). The request must be approved by the course instructor, the Coordinator of the Communication Disorders Program, the Chairperson of the Department of Language, Reading, and Exceptionalities, and a representative of the Graduate School. Instructor, Program Coordinator, and Department Chairperson approval may be granted only under the following conditions:
- Graduate course work completed in non-degree status is not considered in decisions regarding admission to degree-seeking graduate study in the Communication Disorders Program.
- Permission may be granted only when there is space available without increasing the maximum enrollment for the course, as stated in the Schedule of Classes.
- Persons who are granted permission to register for one or more graduate CD courses in non-degree status may not register for any course until all degree-seeking graduate students who need the course have registered for it.
- Persons in non-degree status may not register for any CD courses titled Clinical Practicum or Internship.
