Clinical Practicum

After successfully completing the "core curriculum" (the first five classes in the standard sequence of study), students will enroll in clinical practicum. The clinical practicum courses and internship provide the 400 hours of supervised clinical experienced required for the Certificate of Clinical Competence.

Because factors such as clinical caseload, clinical educator workload, and student clinician availability often vary across semesters, there is no way to predict ahead of time precisely what each student's practicum assignment will be. However, the program maintains general guidelines for specific clinical assignments.

Specifically, all students enrolled in CD 5564 Practicum I will be assigned to practica in which they are supervised by ASU faculty. Additionally, clinical practicum assignments take into consideration the coursework students have completed as well as coursework in which they are enrolled during the current semester. Finally, it is necessary for students to have experience with a broad range of communication disorders, ages, and diverse populations. Thus, students will likely be assigned to a unique setting (e.g., preschool, medical, corrections) each semester. Whenever possible, student requests for specific practicum sites will also be considered. In order to ensure a diverse clinical experience, some practicum placements will be off-campus.

The capstone practicum experience of the graduate program is the internship completed during the final semester.

More detailed information about clinical practicum is available from the Clinic Manual. Links to sections most likely to be of interest to prospective students are included below.
