Do I have to be admitted to the College of Education to take classes from the LRE department?
For courses not listed in the General Bulletin as needing Admission to Teacher Education or other restriction, you are more than welcome to register for our courses.
How do I register for a course taught through LRE that requires Chairperson Approval?
Please come by Edwin Duncan 124, fill out a Permission to Add Form with the Student Services Office, and they will seek Chair approval.
First come by 124 Edwin Duncan and get a Permission to Add form from Student Services, and then go see the instructor to get their approval. Once you have their approval, bring the signed form back to Student Services and we will get Chair approval. NOTE: The approval of the form ONLY gives you a permit. YOU MUST REGISTER YOURSELF FOR THE COURSE.
I am a major in the program and I am having trouble registering for classes. With whom should I talk to get help?
If the issue is that you don't know which courses you would like to take, you should first see your advisor. If the issue is that you need course information or availability, first check the web and then (if needed) feel free to call LRE Student Services (828.262.2182). If the registration system is blocking you out, please call the Registrar's Office first at (828.262.2050). They may refer you to the LRE Student Services Manager.
I am a major in the LRE department and I need to take a course overload for one semester. What do I do to get it approved?
Come by the LRE Student Services Office, we will give you the form and instruct you on the steps needed to correct the situation.
I need to withdraw from classes for this semester. Whom should I contact?
To receive a 'no academic penalty' withdrawal during the first 9 weeks of the semester, the student must formally contact the Registrar's Office and officially withdraw from courses.
I am having trouble in my classes and feel that I am being treated unfairly. How do I proceed to try and find a solution to my issue?
The LRE department has set guidelines for students who have concerns about their courses, program, or clinical work. Please refer to this link.
I would like more information on the Special Education, Reading, or Communication Disorders programs. Whom do I contact?
For general information, please contact Student Services at (828.262.2182). For any questions which deal with licensure, job opportunities, or program changes, please see the LRE information for the proper program coordinator to contact.
I applied to the Reading or Special Education graduate program. When should I expect to receive an admissions answer?
Reading and Special Education evaluate applications within two weeks of their receipt from the graduate school after the March 15 (Fall) and September 15 (Spring and Summer) deadlines.
My application is not complete for Graduate School. What can I do?
First, get all your materials together a soon as possible and make sure to make the deadline set by the Grad School or the program you are trying to enter. If test scores are holding you back, remember YOU MUST TAKE EITHER THE GRE OR THE MILLER'S IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED! Also a helpful hint, make sure the references are sent in to the grad school in sealed envelopes with the preparer's initials signed on the flap. Also make sure to send transcripts DIRECTLY to the grad school.
I went to Undergraduate School at ASU. Do I need to request a transcript when I apply for admission to the graduate school?
No, a transcript will be generated for the graduate school. However, if you transferred any degrees or credits into ASU, you must still order those transcripts be sent from former school to the ASU graduate school.
I am a non-traditional student who wishes to obtain a Master's degree through LRE and Appalachian State University. What should I do first?
The First and most important matter is to apply to one of our programs through the graduate school. http://www.graduate.appstate.edu/gradstudies/prospective/
I have been accepted to one of the LRE's graduate programs. How do I get a Graduate Assistantship?
You must first fill out the Graduate Assistantship Application which is a part of the admissions packet. Your application will be forwarded to the LRE student Services Office and you will be put on a list. After admissions decisions have been made by the programs, the openings left after those approved from previous semesters will be filled based on your resume, Undergraduate GPA, and interest. NOT EVERYONE GETS AN ASSISTANTSHIP. They are distributed on a competitive basis. If you do not receive a GA from LRE, please ask to be referred to other areas in the College of Education.
The information on the Communication Disorders Program says that it is very competitive. How can I improve my chances?
Typically the primary differential factor in the formula scores for those admitted versus non-admit, has been scores on the GRE/or MAT. If you received a score below 800 on the GRE or below 33 on the MAT, you may want to strongly consider retaking the exam. Remember your formula score for CD admissions is (the last 60 hours of your undergraduate degree X 400) plus the verbal and quantitative scores from the GRE or the Miller's equivalent. Your references are also weighed as to comments and scoring.
Can I get a tour of the Communication Disorders Facilities?
Yes, Tours are conducted one Friday a month (usually the last Friday) and you must call at least two weeks in advance to set up an appointment. Appointments are also available for you to talk to representatives from other programs in LRE. Please contact LRE Student Services so that we may direct you to the proper sources.
I am still not sure what I want to have as my major. Are there campus resources to assist me?
YES. You may contact the Career Development Center at http://careers.appstate.edu/. Or if you are in General Studies, contact your advisor. We can also assist you with general information in the LRE Student Services Office (124 Edwin Duncan)
I am an off campus extension student. What services can LRE assist me with in the admissions process and in completing my degree?
In the admission process you will need to make sure that both the Office of Extension and the Graduate School know you want to be in an off-campus cohort when you apply. Remember deadlines are not any different for off-campus and on-campus applicants. See the graduate admissions site for more information. Currently, Language, Reading, and Exceptionalities has offcampus programs in Reading (Master's) and Special Education (B.S. and Master's). Contact the Office of Extension for further information.
