S degree, students must apply for Admission to Candidacy for a graduate degree. Admission to Graduate School does not carry with it Admission to Candidacy for the graduate degree (Graduate Bulletin, Appalachian State University, 2005-2007, p. 40). Rationale During the first 12 hours of students coursework (9 hours for Ed. S. students), the Higher Education faculty has a chance to assess the quality of their academic work. The faculty is also able to get a sense of the qualifications the students will bring to the field in general and the graduate program in particular. The professors then make a collective, professional judgment as to whether the students meet the criteria for Admission to Candidacy (see below). An affirmative decision means the faculty believes the student is capable of completing the degree and making important contributions to Higher Education. Students who are not admitted to Candidacy cannot register for further course work leading to a graduate degree in the Higher Education Program options. Criteria for Admission to Candidacy To be admitted to Candidacy, students must have at least a 3.0 Grade Point Average. In addition, they must meet other criteria including: 1. Effective critical thinking and problem-solving skills; 2. Strong communication skills (both written and oral); 3. Ethical standards and qualities needed by professionals in the field; and 4. Excellent interpersonal skills. The Higher Education faculty will review the students application for Admission to Candidacy and make a recommendation to the Graduate School. Faculty will consider each candidates overall performance in classes, including interactions with other students and faculty in making a decision in relation to the criteria as described above. If the application is not approved, the student will be informed in writing by the Chair of the Department of Leadership and Educational Studies. Appeal Procedure If the Application for Candidacy is not approved, the student may appeal the decision within 14 workdays from the date of the letter from the Department Chair. The written appeal must be directed to the Chair, describe the basis of the appeal, and provide additional information if appropriate. The appeal will be reviewed by the Chair in consultation with the higher education faculty. If the appeal is denied, the student may then appeal to the Appeals Committee as set forth in the current Graduate Bulletin.
