Promotion and Tenure Guidelines
The following guidelines are intended to serve as indicators of the types of activity that can be considered as outstanding or acceptable in the process of making decisions on promotion and tenure. They are not intended to serve as absolutes or fixed elements, all of which must be attained in order to be promoted or to receive tenure. This listing of activities is not all inclusive nor does it represent any number of times any given activity must take place. It is the task of the person seeking promotion and/or tenure to present evidence that activities have taken place and with sufficient frequency and of high enough quality to warrant a positive decision toward tenure or promotion. It is the task of the Department Personnel Committee (DPC) to assess the information presented, using their best judgment, to determine if the person making application should receive promotion and/or tenure.
For promotion from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor or for granting tenure it is expected that the candidate will be outstanding in one of the three areas being evaluated (scholarship, teaching, and service) and at least be acceptable in the other two.
For promotion from Associate Professor to Full Professor it is expected that the candidate will be outstanding in two of the three areas being evaluated (scholarship, teaching and service) and at least be acceptable in the third.
