Merit Guidelines

Scholarly Activity

Acceptable

A consistent record that includes:

  • Attendance at professional conferences.
  • Publication in state or regional refereed journals.
  • Publication in state, regional, national, or international non-refereed journals or newsletters.
  • Presentations at local, state, or regional conferences.
  • Presentations at RCOE or ASU sponsored symposia or colloquia.
  • Evidence of on-going inquiry.
  • Participation on review boards for journals and other scholarly publications.

 

Outstanding

A consistent record that includes:

  • Publication in national or international refereed journals.
  • Publication of a book, a monograph, or a chapter of a book.
  • Presentations at national or international conferences.
  • Supervision of student scholarly publications.
  • Nominated for or received awards for writing/scholarly activity.
  • Production significant artifacts such as a video or museum exhibit.
  • Writing or directing funded grants that seek to add to the body of knowledge (research grants).
  • Serves as editor or on an editorial board for a journal.

There is a continuum of activity running from acceptable to outstanding. A modest level of activity/publications is found at the acceptable end of the continuum moving up to a more prolific level of activity/publications at the outstanding end of the continuum.

Teaching

Acceptable As Recognized Skill in Teaching

 

  • Good student evaluations and Peer reviews that indicate good teaching.
  • Good unsolicited feedback about classes.
  • Appropriate use of technology.
  • Appropriate infusion of issues of diversity.
  • Serve on thesis and dissertation committees.
  • Evidence that content is kept current.

 

Outstanding Skill in Teaching

 

  • High student evaluations.
  • Peer reviews that indicate excellence.
  • Excellent unsolicited feedback on classes.
  • Chair of thesis and dissertation committees.
  • Evidence of infusion of scholarly activity into instruction.
  • Participation in professional development related to instruction.
  • Evidence of revisions of existing courses that significantly improve them.
  • Developing new courses that enhance the curriculum of a program.
  • Offers well conceived independent studies and appropriately designed individual studies.
  • Evidence of the infusion of technology into course activities that significantly enhances students’ experience or serves as a model of technology use by students.
  • Nominated for and/or received teaching awards.

 

Service

Acceptable

 

  • Serves on department, college, university committees as needed.
  • Member of professional organizations.
  • Contributes to public schools (K-12), community colleges, or libraries, etc.
  • Advises students
  • Serves on a review boards for journals.
  • Serves as a member of or consultant for a taskforce, committee, commission, or institution.
  • Serve as a program coordinator.

 

Outstanding

 

  • Serves as a key officer or chair of department, college, or university committee.
  • Active and productive member of multiple department, college, or university committees.
  • Serves as a board member or officer of a state, regional, national, or international organization.
  • Directs or is an active participant making outstanding contributions to accreditation and program reviews.
  • Wrote or directs funded grant that seeks to improved Appalachian, community, etc. (service grants).
  • Nominated for or recipient of a service award.
  • Record of advocacy/leadership in addressing current educational issues.
  • Plans or organizing a conference.
  • Active participant/leader of curricular revisions for a program.
  • Superior work as program coordinator.
