Leadership & Educational Studies

Department Overview

The Department of Leadership and Educational Studies prepares students for employment in a wide variety of teaching, administrative and service roles in:

  • public schools
  • public and school libraries
  • four-year colleges and universities
  • community colleges
  • adult education
  • instructional media

While most courses provided by departmental faculty support Master’s and Educational Specialist’s programs, three courses are offered to undergraduate teacher education majors. Foundations of American Education is a required course for all ASU teacher education majors. This is an interdisciplinary class dedicated to the interpretive and normative examination and evaluation of teaching and learning in American schools and society.

The following graduate programs are offered in Leadership and Educational Studies:

MASTER’S PROGRAMS

Instructional Technology

Instructional Technology Specialist, Computers (437D)
For Public School Personnel leading to licensure in North Carolina

Higher Education/Community College

Administration (454B)
For mid- and upper-level management and administration positions in colleges and universities

Adult Education (454C)
For assessing adult learning needs and planning, administering, and implementing courses, workshops, and programs for adults

Developmental Education (454D)
For teaching or administrative positions serving under-prepared remedial/developmental students in colleges and universities

Teaching (454E)
For teaching positions in community colleges and universities

Library Science (MLS)

School Libraries & Media Centers
Leads to Media Coordinator (076) Licensure for School Librarians

Public Libraries
Leads to application for Public Librarian Certification from the North Carolina Public Librarian Certification Commission

School Administration (MSA)

School Administration
Leads to initial licensure as a school administrator in North Carolina

EDUCATION SPECIALIST’S PROGRAMS

Higher Education/Community College (EdS)
Provides students who have earned a Master’s degree an opportunity to advance their careers in community colleges, four-year colleges or in organizations and institutions which provide adult education programs and services. Concentrations in the following areas:

Educational Administration (EdS)
Provides students who have earned a Master’s degree an opportunity to earn additional graduate work in educational administration. This degree leads to sixth-year licensure.
