ANNOUNCEMENTS:
May 2, 2008: *CANCELLED* Mental Health Mixer!!! An end of the year celebration focusing on the collaboration of mental health disciplines has been planned for May 2nd at 7:00pm at Murphey's on King Street. Students from counseling, social work, and psychology will hopefully be there!! Cost is $5.00 per person which includes 10 wings and a soda. PLEASE RSVP to md76170@appstate.edu by April 29th.
May 9, 2008: Orchesis Honor Society will host the SPRING 2008 GLOW art reception on May 9, 2008 at the Councill House. More details TBA.
May 11, 2008: Commencement Ceremony for Spring graduates is May 11, 2008.
June 6, 2008: The deadline to apply to sit for the Fall adminstration of the National Certified Counselor Exam (GSA-NCC) is June 6, 2008. The exam will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2008. You are eligible for the Fall 2008 exam if you are graduating in the Fall 2008, Spring 2008/2009, and Summer 2008 terms. Dr. Christina Rosen Galvin is the GSA-NCC Campus Coordinator. Prior to receiving the GSA-NCC application, the pre-application form must be completed and returned to Dr. Christina Galvin! Once the pre-application form is complete and Dr. Galvin reviews the form, then you can receive your GSA-NCC application. Therefore, please do not wait until the last minute to ensure that you will COMPLETE the process by June 6th.
July 3, 2008: Application deadline for summer graduates wanting to participate in the August commencement ceremony is July 3, 2008 [Download Application].
October 18, 2008: Fall 2008 GSA-NCC Exam administration. Best wishes to everyone taking the exam! Applications to take the exam close on June 6, 2008. Questions regarding the GAS-NCC Exam can be forwarded to Dr. Christina Galvin.
**NOTE: Current students wishing to apply for either the Addictions Certificate or the Expressive Arts Certificate must apply through the Graduate School using the new ONLINE APLICATION.
2008 AWARDS:
The NC division of ASERVIC (NCASERVIC), under the leadership of President Dr. Geri Miller, received
the Most Improved Division Award from the American Counseling Association. Congratulations Dr. Miller!
Congratuations to Dr. Daisy Waryold received the 2008 Women of Influence Award at the ASU Women's Leadership Conference! Dr. Waryold is a faculty member of the HPC Department and often teaches courses to community counseling students, such as the required Multicultural Counseling course.
Congratulations to Kristin Dickie who has been awarded a scholarship to attend the 2008 ACA Legislative Institute in Alexandria, VA representing the North Carolina Counseling Association (NCCA). Kristin also received the 2008 Dr. Mary Thomas Burke Award given to a graduate student who has shown an outstanding commitment to the counseling profession by a willingness to be involved in professional organizations and activities. The award was given by the NC division of the Association of Spiritual, Ethical and Religious Values in Counseling (ASERVIC).
2007 AWARDS:

Congratulations to Community Counseling Program Coordinator, Dr. Keith Davis, who has been awarded the RCOE Outstanding Scholarship Award for the 2006-2007 academic year. [More]

The Community Counseling program faculty are proud to announce that first year Community Counseling student, Melanie Childers, recieved one of the highly competitive 2007-09 (renewable) Chancellor's Fellowships. Melanie is currently Director of Pastoral Care at Watauga Medical Center and comes to our program with a MDiv. We wish her great success as she pursues her education in community counseling and maintains her professional ties in pastoral care at Watauga Medical Center. Congratulations Malanie!
Congratulations to community counseling graduate students Meghann Plumb and Heather Purdin for each receiving an Alumni Scholarship Award for the 2007-08 academic year. Meghann (not pictured) was unable to attend the awards ceremony due to her practicum placement obligations. However, Meghann is honored to have been awarded the Alumni Scholarship from among such a strong and competitive scholarship application pool. Ms. Purdin (pictured right) wishes to thank everyone in the Community Counseling program for their solid support during her first year at ASU, which gave her the confidence to apply for the Alumni Scholarship for the 2007-08 year.
Congratulations to graduate student Steve Sorrells. Steve was awarded the 2006-07 Mary Thomas Burke Award (Graduate Student Recognition) for his outstanding committment to the counseling profession. Steve was also recently awarded a national award from the International Association of Addiction and Offender Counselors (IAAOC), a division of the American Counseling Association.

May 13, 2008: ACA and AMHCA have been pushing hard this year to make sure that
Medicare's mental health benefit includes coverage of licensed professional
counselors. Counselors are encouraged to contact their Senators and ask them to
cosponsor S. 921, the Seniors Mental Health Access Improvement Act [Stay Advised]

March 5, 2008: "House Passes Historic Parity Legislation" - On March 5th the House of Representatives passed comprehensive legislation requiring private health insurance plans to use the same treatment limitations and financial requirements for mental health and addictive disorder coverage as is used for substantially all other covered services... Septemer 7, 2007: Congress gave final approval on September 7, 2007, to a compromise budget reconciliation bill--The College Cost Reduction and Access Act (H.R. 2669)--that creates a new loan forgiveness program for direct-loan borrowers who work in public-service fields for 10 years... Effective July 1, 2008, insurers providing group health plans will be required to provide full parity for individuals with bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, anorexia nervosa, bulimia, schizophrenia, paranoia, post-traumatic stress disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder, meaning equal policy coverage between physical illness and these mental health concerns is required. A minimum benefit standard will be determined and required for all other mental health concerns. [Read HB 973]
July 9, 2007: The California State Assembly sent a counselor licensure bill (AB 1486) to the State Senate for consideration, but the bill did not gain enough votes by the Senate. The bill will be revisited in January 2008. [Stay advised]

April 19, 2007: NC Board eligible LPC candidates may soon be able to qualify for medicaid provider enrollment. The Mental Hlth Prof'ls/Medicaid Enrollmnt Bill (H 1723) has passed its first reading and has been forwarded on to the House Health Committee. [Stay Advised ]
