All students interested in the Master of Arts Community Counseling program at Appalachian State University must apply through the Cratis D. Williams Graduate School. The Graduate School processes the applications and sends them to the Department of Human Development and Psychological Counseling for review. The Admissions Committee of the Department of Human Development and Psychological Counseling will make a recommendation to the Graduate School regarding acceptance. The Department begins accepting students for the master's degree programs in early February for the following summer and fall sessions. Please note: no students seeking admission to the Community Counseling degree program are accepted for a spring session entry.
In addition to the required online application form that must be submitted to the Graduate School through the online admissions process, prospective students must also submit a resume, complete a special admissions questionnaire required by the Department of Human Development and Psychological Counseling, and submit references as part of the online admissions application. The HPC admissions questionnaire provides the department with important information regarding your goals and reasons for applying to an HPC program.
Please upload your resume and the completed HPC questionnaire on the supplemental page of the Graduate School application (preferred method).
If you cannot upload the resume and questionnaire on the supplemental page, you may submit a hard copy by mailing to:

When making a recommendation to the Graduate School for Admissions, the Admissions Committee of the Department of Human Development and Psychological Counseling considers the following documentation provided by the applicant: undergraduate G.P.A., graduate G.P.A (if applicable), GRE scores, references, resume, and the special HPC admissions questionnaire.
Admission to the Community Counseling Program is quite competitive. Approximately one of four applicants is accepted each year.
