ANNOUNCEMENTS, AWARDS, & LEGISLATION

Beginning with the Fall 2009 term, the Community Counseling Program will be known as the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program. This change in program title reflects the most current changes in the counseling profession and does not change our accreditation status with the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).

November 10, 2009: Clinical Mental Health Counseling research poster session Edwin Duncan hall room 225 2:30-4:30 p.m.. Open to all! An opportunity to meet and mingle with students and faculty in a relaxed environment with good food and music and learn about current topics in the counseling profession.

 


2009 AWARDS:

Congratulations to Dr. Geri Miller who was awarded the Ella Stephens Barret Award and to Dr. Keith Davis who received the Professional Writing and Research Award at the North Carolina Counseling Association conference, which was held in conjunction with the American Counseling Association national conference in Charlotte this year. Congratulations also to the following graduates of the Community Counseling program who were also award recipients, Justin Leonard ('07) Beginning Counselor Award, Jennifer Froyd ('08) Mary Thomas Burke Award, and Jennifer Johnson ('08) Most Improved State Division Award within the North Carolina Counseling Association for her work in membership drive for the Association for Gay, Lesbian, and Bi-Sexual Issues in Counseling.

Congratulations to Dr. Sally Atkins who received the national Samuel T. Gladding Inspiration and Motivation Award from the Association for Creativity in Counseling (ACC). The ACC is a division of the American Counseling Association. [More]

 

 

2008 AWARDS:

The NC division of ASERVIC (NCASERVIC), under the leadership of President Dr. Geri Miller, received
the Most Improved Division Award from the American Counseling Association. Congratulations Dr. Miller!

Congratulations to Dr. Daisy Waryold who received the 2008 Women of Influence Award at the ASU Women's Leadership Conference! Dr. Waryold is a faculty member of the HPC Department and often teaches courses to community counseling students, such as the required Multicultural Counseling course.

Congratulations to Kristin Dickie who has been awarded a scholarship to attend the 2008 ACA Legislative Institute in Alexandria, VA representing the North Carolina Counseling Association (NCCA). Kristin also received the 2008 Dr. Mary Thomas Burke Award given to a graduate student who has shown an outstanding commitment to the counseling profession by a willingness to be involved in professional organizations and activities.  The award was given by the NC division of the Association of Spiritual, Ethical and Religious Values in Counseling (ASERVIC).

The Clinical Mental Health Counseling program faculty are proud to announce that first year Clinical Mental Health Counseling student, Melanie Childers, recieved one of the highly competitive 2007-09 (renewable) Chancellor's Fellowships. Melanie is currently Director of Pastoral Care at Watauga Medical Center and comes to our program with a MDiv. We wish her great success as she pursues her education in community counseling and maintains her professional ties in pastoral care at Watauga Medical Center. Congratulations Malanie!

Congratulations to community counseling graduate students Meghann Plumb and Heather Purdin for each receiving an Alumni Scholarship Award for the 2007-08 academic year. Meghann (not pictured) was unable to attend the awards ceremony due to her practicum placement obligations. However, Meghann is honored to have been awarded the Alumni Scholarship from among such a strong and competitive scholarship application pool. Ms. Purdin (pictured right) wishes to thank everyone in the Community Counseling program for their solid support during her first year at ASU, which gave her the confidence to apply for the Alumni Scholarship for the 2007-08 year.

Steve was awarded the 2006-07 Mary Thomas Burke Award (Graduate Student Recognition) for his outstanding committment to the counseling profession. Steve was also recently awarded a national award from the International Association of Addiction and Offender Counselors (IAAOC),  a division of the American Counseling Association.

July 27, 2007: NC advances mental health parity. Effective July 1, 2008, insurers providing group health plans will be required to provide full parity for individuals with bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, anorexia nervosa, bulimia, schizophrenia, paranoia, post-traumatic stress disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder, meaning equal policy coverage between physical illness and these mental health concerns is required. A minimum benefit standard will be determined and required for all other mental health concerns. [Read HB 973]
