Each summer, the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program offers a variety of summer institutes. Below, you can find examples of such unique course offerings.
HPC 5535 - Expressive Arts Institute with Children & Adolescents: This institute is designed to present a comprehensive and developmentally oriented approach for the application of play theories and the creative/expressive arts to the process of counseling children and adolescents. The course will consist of class discussions, presentations, and cooperative and group experiential learning activities.

HPC 6530 - Art In Community: An exploration of creative process in intermodal art making within the human community of expressive artists and with the more than human community of the natural world. In retreat in a beautiful setting in the Appalachian Mountains, we will engage in processes of art making together while learning about the healing power of the arts. This year’s institute will feature the seven founding mothers and fathers of Appalachian State University’s Expressive Arts Therapy Program who will all teach in the institute. We will continue the tradition of the program’s strong emphasis on creative collaboration and building community.

HPC 6570 - Appalachian Addictions Institute: This annual summer institute is designed to provide graduate students and working professionals with an opportunity for in-depth exploration of cutting-edge, clinical issues and topics within the addictions field. *This year's topics include: overview of addiction recovery in NC, employee assistance programs, relapse prevention, ethics, dual diagnosis, using a gestalt approach with couples facing addiction issues, & supervision.
