Student Goals
The Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership at Appalachian State University is designed for educators who are committed to improving educational organizations. Doctoral faculty strive to develop within students the capabilities to provide effective leadership within an educational organization. The Program is committed to a Conceptual Framework that views learning as a social process and engages students in active collaboration with fellow students and faculty in research, teaching, and educational service.
General goals for students are:
- to develop a philosophical perspective on educational leadership;
- to gain an understanding of the knowledge base upon which educational leadership rests;
- to expand understanding of the scope, development, and complexity of educational institutions;
- to obtain knowledge to undertake educational leadership positions with confidence;
- to communicate effectively in leadership positions;
- to be proficient in using and conducting research; and
- to determine personal attributes for bringing about positive change in educational institutions.
