Friday, July 25, 2008

When can I start taking classes?
Following acceptance into the program, new students begin their course work in the summer of each year. Only students who have been admitted to the doctoral program are eligible to enroll.

How many years will it take to earn my degree?
Required course work takes 2 1/2 years. This time period is reduced if a student takes more than 7 credit hours per semester or receives transfer credits.

When are classes held during the regular academic year?
Two courses are offered back to back one day a week with a 30-minute break between. Classes begin at 3 PM and conclude at 8:30. An additional course, the Professional Seminar, meets several times during the first two semesters, at a time convenient for students, sometimes on the web.

How many hours can be accepted as transfer credit?
Up to 30 hours can be accepted if the student holds an Ed.S. degree from Appalachian State University; up to 9 credit hours can be accepted from other universities. Transfer credits are reviewed on an individual basis by the Director of the Doctoral Program and must have been completed within the past 7 years.

When are interviews conducted and when will I know if I am accepted into the program?
Interviews with the Director of the Doctoral Program are conducted throughout the year and must have been held before an application is considered complete. Applications and all related materials must be received in the Graduate School by March 1 of each year. Students are notified of their acceptance status no later than April 15.

How many students are accepted each year?
Approximately 12 to 14 students are accepted each year.

What score is acceptable on the GRE?
A score of 4.0 or better is required on the Analytical Writing section of the GRE. Students must also submit a score for the verbal section of the test.

How long does it take for the university to receive my scores?
Reports from computer-based GRE testing are mailed approximately 10 to 15 days after the test is taken. Results from paper-based testing are mailed approximately 4 to 6 weeks after the test is taken.

Will the Ed.D. degree lead to principal certification?
Students may elect to earn administrative certification by selecting the licensure concentration. Students are expected to have principal's licensure when they enter the program track that leads to certification for superintendents. Students may complete requirements for principal's licensure within the EdD program (see the director or coordinator of the MSA program.)
