The mission of the Doctoral Program in Education Leadership is to prepare students for leadership roles in promoting student learning and enlightenment in public schools and community colleges. The collaborative efforts of a scholarly community of practice support students in their personal transformation and in identifying and addressing critical educational issues. We encourage students to apply theory to practice in conducting research, constructing knowledge, and in improving educational systems.
Characteristics of the program include:
- two areas of concentration -- general (community college and higher
education) and public school superintendent's licensure;
- orientation and mentoring for entering students;
- a seminar format of instruction;
- course offerings scheduled for the convenience of students;
- involvement of faculty/scholars from across the campus and in the field;
- individual choice of concentrations;
- advice and counsel for students as they progress through the program;
- an internship which provides students with mentors who are leaders in the field;
- a web site containing a student "handbook";
- a newsletter, Speerings;
- financial assistance when needed.
The Ed.D. program for both concentrations consists of a minimum of 60 credit hours beyond the master’s degree:
- 27 to 36 credit hours - core courses
- up to12 elective hours
- 3 to 6 hours - internship
- minimum 6 hours - dissertation
