In July of 2004, The Graduate Program in Media Literacy will feature a special one week session with 2 nationally and internationally respected voices in media education.
On Friday July 9th and Saturday the 10th, Jean Kilbourne, producer of Killing Us Softly and Still Killing Us Softly, and the author of Deadly Persuasion: Why Women and Girls Must Fight the Addictive Power of Advertising, will be our featured presenter. Jean Kilbourne is based at Wellesley College and has twice been named Lecturer of the Year by The National Association of Campus Activities. From Sunday July 11th- Thursday the 15th, we are particularly proud and privileged to welcome to our campus, David Buckingham, Professor of Education and the Director of the Center for the Study of Children and Media, Institute of Education, University of London.
Professor Buckingham's newest book [2003] is Media Education: Literacy, Learning and Contemporary Culture. Some of his earlier titles include, The Making of Citizens: Young People, News and Politics; After the Death of Childhood: Growing Up in the Age of Electronic Media; and Teaching Popular Culture: Beyond Radical Pedagogy.
David Buckingham's sessions will address :
David Considine will team with David Buckingham during this series of day long classes. Since we expect interest in this class to be very high, interested students are encouraged to contact the program coordinator [ 828 262 2270] [ considinedm@appstate.edu] no later than March 1st to request that a seat in the class be reserved for them.
We can also offer on campus housing and daily meal tickets to out- of-state students who request it. Out-of-state students who have not attended the campus before need to know that the nearest major airport is Charlotte-Douglas International Airport. The drive from Charlotte to the Boone campus takes approximately 2 hours 15 minutes. Limited bus service from Charlotte is available .
Located in rural North Carolina, the program at Appalachian State University deals with issues of difference and diversity and has already attracted students from across the U.S. as well as international students from Cyprus, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines.
