SUMMER 2008 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Statewide Institute for Teaching Excellence (SITE)
2008-2009
The North Carolina Mathematics and Science Education Network (NC-MSEN) has developed and implemented a major new series of institutes for mathematics and science teachers, coordinated with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.
These institute programs address mathematics and science content knowledge in conjunction with appropriate and tested pedagogical and assessment strategies to help North Carolina teachers deliver the best mathematics and science to the students of North Carolina. Except for the Middle Math Summer Institute, all 2008 Summer Institutes are in the SITE Program.
Offerings through the Mathematics and Science Education Center (MSEC) and the Mathematics Education Leadership Training program (MELT) at Appalachian State University

SITE: 3-5 Science – emphasis is placed on science content and the authentic integration of literacy, mathematics, and technology into the curriculum. The institute models best practices in science pedagogy. Assessment in science and managing science materials are included. The institute includes Rock Cycle, Ecology, Energy/Forces, and Weather and Climate.
SITE: 6-8 Science – is designed to deepen participants’ science content knowledge and to strengthen their ability to teach science through inquiry. Emphasis is placed on the integration of literacy, mathematics, and technology into the science curriculum and on the use of authentic assessments. The topics included in this institute are Life Systems and Earth Systems.
SITE: Biology – helps teachers implement the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for biology more effectively. Content material and pedagogical strategies focus on respiration; photosynthesis; energy transfer in ecosystems; gene regulation; evolution; adaptation and unity; and diversity of life. Content misconceptions, concept mapping, and reading strategies also are covered.
SITE: Geometry - is designed to build up secondary geometry competencies by bringing teachers together to consider strategies for teaching North Carolina’s geometry curriculum. Participants use technology to master multiple representations of geometry phenomena including coordinate plane matrix, and algebraic representations.
SITE: Advanced Functions and Modeling (AFM) – is the newest mathematics course being offered in North Carolina’s high schools. AFM was designed as one of the courses to fulfill the 2006 UNC System requirement that all students have two years of mathematics beyond Algebra 2. Many of the students enrolled in this course will be students who will see mathematics in the future only within a real world context.
Middle Math Summer Institute: the Middle Math Summer Institute is designed to support middle school mathematics teachers in meeting the grades 6, 7, and 8 North Carolina Standard Curse of Study competencies in their classrooms. The Institute is two days in length and provides grade-level specific instruction focused on content knowledge, effective teaching strategies, and assessment methods that align with student academic performance standards in North Carolina.
Green and Micro-Scale Chemistry Workshop: The Green and Micro-Scale Chemistry (G&MSC) workshop is a joint effort of several people from the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources and Waste Production Partners with a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency. Covered will be how G&MSC fit into the DPI-prescribed curriculum and how they can be incorporated into high school chemistry courses. There will be discussion of numerous applications of G&MSC along with their pros and cons. Demonstrations will illustrate the principles and techniques involved, ways of starting and incorporating G&MSC into existing programs, and illustrate equipment needed for Micro-Scale chemistry.
