Lois and Ed Reich Scholarships
Dr. Lois Arlene Weisner Reich attended ASU from 1931-1933. She taught school for 17 years and held county school administrative posts for 35 years. In 1985 the college of education was officially named the Ed and Lois Reich College of Education in honor of Dr. Reich and her husband, Dr. Edgar Reich. The Reichs dedicated their lives to helping the children of others, and their philanthropies reached into many areas, but education was always their main goal. In 1985, Dr. Lois Reich gave a generous gift of on-going support to Appalachian State University's College of Education, which was renamed in honor of Lois and Edgar Reich. The will of Dr. Lois Reich in 1997 made possible the funding of scholarships in the Reich name. Scholarship awards are made to undergraduate students in teacher education.
Anne Cannon Scholars Program
The Anne Cannon Scholars Program embodies the philanthropic spirit of Anne Cannon Forsyth and honors her life's work of providing educational opportunities to minority students. Funds are utilized for scholarship awards to highly qualified high school seniors from under- represented groups to attend Appalachian State University. Students must meet certain academic standards to be eligible for the scholarships. Scholarships are awarded to five entering freshmen/high school seniors. In the initial award year, awards were made for currently enrolled Sophomores (5), Juniors (5), and Seniors (5). Preference is given to NC residents who express an interest in pursuing teacher education at Appalachian State University.

Grace S. Beach and J.W. Beach Annual Scholarship
(In Memory of Mae Simpson Holton)
The Grace S. and J.W. Beach scholarship was established by the estate of Grace S. Beach in memory of her sister, Ms. Mae Simpson Holton. This scholarship is an annual award to an elementary education major. Preference is given to those who graduated from Watauga High School, as well as Avery and Ashe County High schools, and are rising juniors or seniors.

Reich Scholar Award
In October 2006, the Reich College of Education held its first annual golf tournament, "Swing for Scholarships," to raise funds to establish the Reich Scholar Award for teacher education majors. Many individuals and businesses contributed to the establishment of this annual event and scholarship, and they and others continue to do so, through their financial contributions, support as sponsors of the tournament, participation in the actual tournament itself, and/or their contributions of time and service. The Reich Scholar Award is an academic excellence award and recipients are sophomore teacher education majors who have met all teacher education admission requirements, but who, because they are still sophomores, are not yet eligible for Junior/Senior scholarships.

"Do Unto Others..."
The "Do Unto Others..." scholarship was established in 2003 and is the result of a charitable gift made by anonymous donors who believe strongly in the golden rule and the value of education. The donors believe the importance of sharing and helping others. They also believe in the value of living a healthy lifestyle, including the maintenance of a positive mental attitude. Their hope is that recipients of this award will some day, if able to do so, financially assist students of the future.

W. Amos Abrams Scholarship in Teacher Education
In 1981, the North Carolina Education Association established this scholarship to honor Dr. W. Amos Abrams on his retirement from Appalachian. Dr. Abrams, who passed away in 1991, was Editor Emeritus for North Carolina Education. North Carolina residents intending to teach are given preference for this award.

Daisy Austin Adams Endowed Scholarship for Education
The Adams family established this scholarship in 2005 in honor of Mrs. Daisy Austin Adams, a native of Watauga County who taught in its county school system for more than thirty years. Proceeds from this scholarship endowment are to be awarded to a graduate of Watauga High School who is currently enrolled full-time in elementary education within the Reich College of Education.

Ms. Mary Anne Barrett is a 1948 graduate of the university. She resides in Charlotte, NC, and is a retired teacher from the Mecklenburg County Public Schools. A life-long advocate for students, Ms. Barrett demonstrated her dedication in establishing this endowed scholarship in 1996 that provides support for students intending to teach.

Jennie McBride Boger Endowed Scholarship for Elementary Education
A 1929 Appalachian graduate, Mrs. Jennie McBride Boger taught elementary school for over 40 years. A charter member of the RCOE’s Rhododendron Society, she funded this scholarship for elementary education majors in 2001. Mrs. Boger resides in Concord, NC.

Barbara Bonnet Memorial Scholarship for Education
The Barbara Bonnet Memorial Scholarship was established in 1996 in memory of Mrs. Barbara Davis Bonnet. This scholarship was endowed by Mr. and Mrs. H. Lance Bonnet of Woodbridge, VA, and family, friends and admirers of Barbara Bonnet. Proceeds are awarded to teacher education students who have demonstrated excellent academic performance.

Mr. Leo and Mrs. Eleanor Brevard, who live in Charlotte, NC, established this endowment in 1998. Mr. and Mrs. Brevard are 1947 graduates of Appalachian. This scholarship provides support for students intending to teach either science or math.

Oscar W. Broome Memorial Scholarship for Education
The Oscar W. Broome Memorial Scholarship was established in 1993 by Mr. Oscar W. Broome, Jr. and Mr. Timothy G. Broome in memory of their father, Mr. Oscar W. Broome, Sr. Mr. Broome was a 1950 graduate of the University and resided in Monroe, NC. The scholarship was created with a preference for selection of students who are from Union County, NC.

Bill and Jewel Brown Endowed Scholarship for Education
Lifelong and now retired educators Dr. William Brown, (Class of 1955) and his wife Jewel (Class of 1955) have dedicated many years to the teaching profession. Created in 2005, Bill and Jewel wish to provide scholarships to students majoring in courses of study within the Reich College of Education.

Chancel and Joan Brown Scholarship for Elementary Education
Both retired educators from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system, Mr. Chancel ‘54 ’61 ’69 ‘71and Mrs. Joan Brown ’54 reside in Winston-Salem, NC. The Browns have been very proactive in their support of the university, including Mr. Brown’s current membership on the RCOE’s Advancement Board. Mr. and Mrs. Brown established this scholarship in 1996 for students majoring in elementary education.

The Paul and Melissa Brown Endowed Scholarship for Business and Education
Donors Paul and Melissa Brown generously endowed this scholarship in 2001 in order to provide scholarship support to a junior or senior majoring within the Reich College of Education. The same award is made as well in the Walker College of Business.

Lindsey E. and Edith Thomas Cagle Endowed Scholarship for Education
The Lindsey E. and Edith Thomas Cagle Endowed Scholarship was established in 1997 by the F. P. Bodenheimer, Jr. family and friends in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Cagle. Mr. Cagle, who passed away in 2001, was a principal in Caldwell County, NC for 38 years. Mrs. Cagle, who still resides in Granite Falls, was a high school teacher for 35 years. Both of them received two degrees in education from Appalachian (Mr. Cagle in 1934 and 1960 and Mrs. Cagle in 1936 and 1960). Preference in selection of this award is given to Caldwell County residents.

Canipe-Bray Scholarship Endowment
In 2004 Christopher Canipe established this scholarship in loving memory of his mother, Ruby Bray Canipe, and his aunts, Mary Edna Bray Reece, Edith Jester Bray, and Iris Minish Canipe- all Appalachian graduates who taught in Yadkin County, North Carolina. This scholarship is designed to provide scholarship assistance for a worthy student with preference given to a teacher education major during the semester of their student teaching. Recipients should preferably be a graduate of Starmount High, Elkin High or Forbush High Schools.

C. Fred Carpenter Scholarship in Teacher Education
Mr. and Mrs. C. Fred Carpenter established this scholarship in 1982 to provide financial assistance to students planning to enter a teaching career. Mr. Carpenter, who passed away in 1992, graduated from Appalachian in 1934, taught, and eventually opened his own floral shop in Winston-Salem, NC. Mrs. Carpenter also attended Appalachian and still resides in Winston-Salem.

The Jan Elise Christman Endowed Award was established by Mrs. Susan Christman and Mr. Verne Christman in 1994 in memory of their daughter, Jan Elise. The award is made to a junior or senior demonstrating academic excellence.

Marguerite Mims Clements Scholarship
In 2006, Caroline Ashley established this gift in memory of her friend and Appalachian alumna Marguerite Mims Clements ’64. The scholarship provides support for full-time students who are enrolled as freshmen, sophomores, juniors or seniors in the Reich College of Education pursuing a degree in primary or elementary education. It is designated for students who demonstrate financial need and are from Watauga or Caldwell counties in North Carolina or Darlington or the surrounding Pee Dee area in South Carolina.

Ione Mann Collins Memorial Scholarship in Special Education
This scholarship was established by the late Ms. Isabelle Mebane in 1996 in memory of Ms. Ione Mann Collins. Ms. Collins, who passed away in 1987, was a 1973 graduate of the university and former teacher with the Catawba County North Carolina Schools. Awards are directed to special education majors.

Grace M. Councill Memorial Scholarship in Teacher Education
Mr. John H. Councill established this scholarship in 1974 in memory of his mother, Mrs. Grace McNinch Councill. Mrs. Councill was a dedicated educator at Appalachian whose main concern was that of providing increasingly better opportunities for young children. Students majoring in early childhood education are given preference in awards. Mr. Councill resides in Boone, NC.

In 1989, Mr. Frank H. Crayton established this scholarship and designated it for North Carolina public school graduates who demonstrate academic promise and good character. Mr. Crayton, who resides in Richmond, VA, graduated from Appalachian in 1942 and is a dedicated alumnus who has contributed to the university in a variety of ways.

E. M. Dixon Memorial Scholarship Endowment
Mrs. Novella Dixon Mayberry established this scholarship in 1990 in memory of her father, Mr. E.M. Dixon. Special consideration for awarding this scholarship is given to children of members of the Winston-Salem Fire Department where Mr. Dixon was a fireman for 49 years. He served as Fire Chief from 1955-1962. Mrs. Mayberry, who is a 1935 graduate of Appalachian, and her husband, Mr. Odell Mayberry, reside in Pulaski, VA.

Dauphin D. and Lillie Shull Dougherty Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Mrs. Annie Dougherty Rufty, a 1921 graduate of Appalachian, established this scholarship in 1989 in memory of her parents, Dauphin Disco Dougherty and Lillie Shull Dougherty. Mr. Dougherty, one of the founders of Appalachian State University, was the school's first business manager and treasurer. Mrs. Rufty passed away in 2001 at the age of 98.

Dougherty Brothers Memorial Scholarship
Family, friends and admirers established the Dougherty Brothers Memorial Scholarship in 1991 in honor and memory of the founding fathers of Appalachian State University, Drs. Dauphin Disco Dougherty and Blanford Barnard Dougherty. Several members of the Dougherty family still reside in Boone.

The Lottie S. Downie Endowed Scholarship for Student Athletes was established in 2006 by Ms. Lottie Downie ’55 for student athletes who are majoring in a course of study within the Reich College of Education. Downie is a retired school principal from Florida.

Marti Readling Estes (Class of 1991) Memorial Scholarship Endowment for Elementary Education
Mr. Eric Estes (Class of 1992) established this scholarship to honor the memory of his wife Marti Readling Estes. Marti touched the lives of many children as a kindergarten teacher in Huntersville, North Carolina. This scholarship is awarded to students majoring in Elementary Education within the Reich College of Education who have preferably graduated from a high school located in the one of the following North Carolina counties: Rowan, Iredell, Mecklenburg (towns of Huntersville, Cornelius or Davidson), Cabarrus, or Lincoln.

Sarah Mathis Finger Endowed Memorial Scholarship for College of Education
Mrs. Sarah Mathis Finger graduated from Appalachian in 1953 and taught fourth grade for 17 years. This scholarship was established in her memory in 1990 by her husband M. Neil Finger, their daughters Kathryn Finger Dillon and Jan Finger Bradford and her husband, David Bradford, and Jim and Madeline Bradford, all graduates of Appalachian. Madeline Bradford is a former RCOE faculty member and an avid supporter of the institution. Awards are directed to Yadkin County, NC, students majoring in education.

Jessie Sifford Gouger Memorial Scholarship
Judy Gouger Schaefer along with family and friends established this scholarship in memory of Jessie Sifford Gouger and John Sifford Gouger. This scholarship is designed to benefit an elementary education major who graduated from a high school in Lincolnton, North Carolina. Mr. Jessie Sifford Gouger graduated in 1940 from Appalachian State Teacher’s College and became a career educator.

The Margaret English Gragg Memorial Scholarship For Teacher Education
The Margaret English Gragg Memorial Scholarship was established by the family, friends and former students of Mrs. Gragg. Mrs. Gragg was a 1941 graduate of the university and a long-time resident of Boone, where she served as an educator, counselor and school board member. Mrs. Gragg passed away in 1995, the year this fund was established. Her devotion and commitment to education set a sterling example. Recipients of this scholarship are students demonstrating academic achievement and enthusiasm for a career in teaching.

The Dorothy Skidmore Green Memorial Scholarship for Child Development – Birth through Kindergarten
The family and friends of Dorothy Skidmore Green, led by her daughters Connie and Carol, created this scholarship in her memory in 1998 to provide scholarship support to juniors, seniors, or graduate students majoring in child development – birth through kindergarten. Dorothy is remembered for loving children and fostering their development and learning. Dr. Connie Green, Dorothy’s daughter, currently serves as an associate professor in the Reich College of Education in the Department of Language, Reading and Exceptionalities where she serves as an expert in child development – birth through kindergarten.

Bob and Helen Heafner Endowed Scholarship for Education
Mrs. Helen Heafner and her late husband, Mr. Bob Heafner, established this scholarship in 1992 to provide support to North Carolina students demonstrating academic achievement. Mrs. Heafner is a 1943 graduate of Appalachian and was a teacher for 42 years. Mr. Heafner was a businessman in Taylorsville, NC. Mrs. Heafner, who still resides in Taylorsville, is a member of the RCOE’s Advancement Board and a charter member of its Rhododendron Society.

L. Hal and Marguerite B. Heafner Scholarship for Education
This scholarship was established in 1996 by Mrs. Marguerite Heafner for the support of students who have demonstrated academic success. A 1936 graduate of the university, Mrs. Heafner is a retired principal of the Lincoln County Public Schools. In her retirement, Mrs. Heafner has been active in community and church projects in Lincolnton, NC, where she resides.

Ruth V. Hester Scholarship for Education Endowment
A 1948 graduate of the University, Ms. Ruth V. Hester is a retired media specialist from Eastway Junior High School, Charlotte, NC. This scholarship, which Ms. Hester established in 1996, supports rising juniors and seniors who intend to teach.

Allie Austin Hodgin Scholarship in Teacher Education
Mrs. Hodgin established this fund in 1981 to provide encouragement and financial assistance for students majoring in education. Mrs. Hodgin, who passed away in 1984, was a 1934 graduate of Appalachian. She served the university for 39 years as a librarian, 28 of which were spent as head reference librarian.

The Roy C. and Lee Craig Holder Scholarship was established in 1991 by their daughters: Mrs. Theda Holder Moore (ASU 1957), Mrs. Ruth Holder Winslow, Mrs. Cora Holder Keen (ASU 1964), and Mrs. Rhea Holder Swift. This scholarship is directed to incoming freshmen from Watauga County, NC, who intend to teach.

Mrs. Ann Jackson established this scholarship in 1992 in memory of her husband, Mr. Jesse Jackson. Mr. Jackson, who passed away in 1983, was renowned children’s author and former faculty member in the Reich College of Education. This scholarship is directed to teacher education majors for elementary grades K-6 who have demonstrated academic achievement. Mrs. Jackson resides in New York, NY.

Charles and Margaret Wellmon Jarvis Endowed Scholarship
The Charles and Margaret Wellmon Jarvis Endowed Scholarship was established in 1998 by Mrs. Margaret Jarvis. Mr. and Mrs. Jarvis first met at Appalachian in the late 1940s. Mrs. Jarvis, who graduated in 1949, is retired from the Gaston County, NC, school system and still resides in Gastonia. Mr. Jarvis graduated in 1950. Students from Gaston County and Cleveland County receive preference in the awarding of this scholarship.

David Jenkins Endowed Scholarship for Teacher Education
Established in 2005 by Dr. David (Class of 1966) and Mrs. Linda Jenkins, the scholarship will be available to full-time students pursuing a teacher-education major. For the last 35 years, Jenkins has served as a professor and administrator at North Carolina State University.

Edith V. Lackey Endowed Scholarship for Female Prospective Teacher of Primary Grades
Ms. Edith Lackey established this scholarship for female, early childhood education majors in 1990. Ms. Lackey earned an education degree from Appalachian in 1937, an, in 1950, became the first person to earn a Masters in Primary Education from the university. She passed away in 2002.

Nina Annas Lee Scholarship Endowment for Teacher Education
Mr. William C. Lee established this scholarship in 1998 in memory of his wife, Mrs. Nina Annas Lee, who passed away in 1997. As an elementary school teacher, Mrs. Lee (who graduated from Appalachian in 1951) touched the lives of many children. This scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior majoring in elementary education or middle grades education. Mr. Lee resides in Hamer, SC.

Grace Greene Lilly Memorial Scholarship for Education
The Grace Greene Lilly Memorial Scholarship was established in 1996 by Mr. and Mrs. Graham C. Greene, Mr. and Mrs. George H. Greene, and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth D. Greene in memory of their mother, Mrs. Grace Greene Lilly. Mrs. Lilly, a 1936 graduate of the university, was born in Ronda, NC. In 1967 she returned to her alma mater and was chairperson of the elementary education department. Mrs. Lilly, who passed away in 1995, received a Teacher's Award for Outstanding Teaching in 1972 from the university. Preference in awarding this scholarship is given to NC students who are curriculum and instruction majors and who demonstrate academic achievement.

Inez Henderson Long Endowed Scholarship for Education
A 1938 graduate of Appalachian, Mrs. Long devoted many years of her life to education as an elementary school teacher in the Charlotte, NC, area. The scholarship Mrs. Long established in 1993 is awarded to juniors and seniors who plan to enter teaching. A long-time friend of the university, Mrs. Long passed away in 2000.

Jim and Katy Martin Scholarship for Education and Athletics
Dr. Jim and Mrs. Katy Martin are both graduates of Appalachian: Dr. Martin in 1954 and Mrs. Martin in 1966. Dr. Martin is a retired public school superintendent with Stanley County Public Schools. The Martins, who reside in Boone, established their scholarship in 1997 to benefit those students who are pursuing a degree in teacher education and are members of a varsity sport.

Robert and Judy Mays Scholarship for Education
This scholarship was established in 2006 by Robert ’68 and Judy Mays ‘69, two graduates of Appalachian. It is reserved for a senior majoring in education within the Reich College of Education, who has been approved for student teaching and who intends to teach in the public schools upon graduation. The student must also demonstrate financial need and show academic promise. The recipient is chosen based on their essay entry on why the student intends to teach in public schools.

The Betty Hodges McFarland Endowed Scholarship for English Education
The Betty Hodges McFarland Endowed Scholarship for English Education was established in 2006 by friends and children in memory of Betty Hodges McFarland. This scholarship is directed to a student from Watauga County who graduated from Watauga High School. Recently awarded in 2006, this scholarship was established to honor the memory of Mrs. Vera Bolick Melton, who served many years as a teacher and librarian in Caldwell, Forsyth, Haywood and Wake counties. Vera also held more than 25 years as an influential head of media services in the North Carolina Community College System. This scholarship is awarded to students majoring in a course of study within the area of Library Science and demonstrate financial need.

Dr. John E. Thomas served as the fourth chancellor of Appalachian from 1979-93. Dr. Thomas was an engineer, a lawyer, a manager and an educator. His influence on the growth and development of the university has had a lasting and beneficial effect. His leadership and vision strengthened the academic program offerings for Appalachian students. Ms. Lois Reich and his many admirers and friends established this scholarship bearing his name in 1993. Dr. Thomas resides in Banner Elk, NC and teaches in the university’s Walker College of Business.

Chapell and Myrtle B. Wilson Scholarship for Teacher Education
Mrs. Myrtle Brandon Wilson, a 1934 graduate of Appalachian, established the Chapell Wilson Scholarship in Teacher Education in 1982 in memory of her husband, Mr. Chapell Wilson. Mr. Wilson came to Appalachian in 1922 where he served for 35 years in an administrative capacity in the education department before passing away in 1956. Mrs. Wilson taught at Appalachian in elementary education for more than 20 years beginning in 1939. Following her death in 2001, the scholarship was renamed at the request of their daughter, Janice Wilson, who resides in Cleveland, Georgia. Scholarships generated by this endowment are provided to those students pursuing a degree and career in education.

Joseph and Anne Yablonski Scholarship Fund
The Joseph Roman Yablonski Scholarship was established in 1990 by Mr. R. Stephen Williams and his wife, Mrs. Joanne Williams, in honor of Mrs. Williams’ father, Mr. Joseph Yablonski. Mr. Williams is a 1969 Appalachian graduate who is a past president of the university’s Alumni Association. He and Mrs. Williams reside in Huntersville, NC, and continue to be loyal supporters of Appalachian. The scholarship was renamed at the request of Mr. and Mrs. Williams in 2000 to honor Mrs. Williams’ mother, Mrs. Anne Yablonski. Awards provide support for students majoring in Special Education.

Daughters Elena Grandy and Elizabeth Ames along with their families established this endowment to honor the life and memory of their mother, Dr. Janet Williams Bloodgood. Dr. Bloodgood was a professor within the Department of Language Reading and Exceptionalities in the Reich College of Education. This endowment provides scholarships for full-time graduate students in the Masters of Reading Education Program who have been or are currently teaching and who express an interest in children’s literature. This endowment also provides funds to purchase children’s books, literature and other reading materials for the Janet W. Bloodgood Reading Room located in the Reading Clinic.

A dedicated school counselor and a graduate of the School Counseling Program, Nancy Campbell Howell (Class of 2000) was lost in a tragic traffic accident in the summer of 2004. Loving parents Glenn and Mary Campbell established this scholarship in 2004 to honor Nancy’s life, her commitment to the counseling profession, and the program where she developed this commitment. Millard Meador Scholarship in Communication Disorders
Dr. Kenneth Hubbard and Mrs. Lynn Hubbard established this scholarship in 1990 in honor of Dr. Millard Meador, a former faculty member and chair of the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology. Dr. Meador, who passed away in 1993, was instrumental in founding the graduate program in speech pathology and in acquiring funding from the Scottish Rite and Children’s Special Health Services to establish the Speech and Hearing Clinic (now the Communication Disorders Clinic), which provides service to children and adults in the areas of hearing, speech, language, and reading. The scholarship was funded by Dr. and Mrs. Hubbard to support students majoring in Communication Disorders.

Established in 1990, the Louise Moore Plybon Scholarship is awarded to students majoring in Library Science with preference given to students with an expressed interest in school librarianship. Eunice Query ‘53 of Hudson, NC, was a former ASU faculty member whose keen mind, scholarship, and personal integrity resulted in nationally recognized library service and leadership programs. The scholarship named in her honor is awarded to a student whose potential and record indicate that he/she can excel academically and accomplish professionally those responsibilities expected of a Eunice Query Scholar. The Endowed Scholarship for Graduate Students in Special Education
This endowment, the idea of faculty emerita, Dr. Dorothea Rau, was established to support both full-time and part-time students pursuing their master’s degree in special education (preference is given to ASU graduates and those who intend to work in the field of secondary special education). Dr. Rau served the Language, Reading and Exceptionalities (LRE) Department faithfully from 1979 to 1992. She served another six years in the LRE Department as an adjunct faculty member.
